What is Sugorokuya?

Founded in 2006, Sugorokuya (すごろくや) is Japan’s first board game store dedicated exclusively to modern analog games. The name comes from sugoroku, a traditional Japanese dice game, and the store pays homage to both Japan’s rich tabletop history and the international explosion of modern board gaming.

Rather than stocking the usual mass-market games, Sugorokuya curates a handpicked selection of:

  • Japanese-designed indie games

  • International award-winners

  • Kid-friendly and educational games

  • Abstract and strategic titles

  • Beautifully illustrated card and party games

Every title on their shelves is play-tested and staff-approved, and their knowledgeable team is always ready to guide you based on your preferences—even if you don’t speak Japanese.

Why Visit Sugorokuya?

Sugorokuya is more than just a shop—it’s a community hub for board game culture in Japan. The stores host events, game nights, and are frequently involved in publishing and promoting original Japanese board games both domestically and overseas.

Top reasons to visit:

  • Discover Japanese-made games you can’t find anywhere else

  • Get advice and recommendations from passionate staff

  • Find language-independent games perfect for travelers

  • Take home a souvenir that brings people together—not just takes up suitcase space
