Japan's Famous Snow Monkeys Will Soon Require Reservations: What Travelers Need to Know

For decades, visiting Japan's famous Snow Monkeys has been one of the country's most iconic wildlife experiences. Watching wild Japanese macaques relax in steaming hot springs at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park in Nagano has become a bucket-list experience for visitors from around the world.

However, from August, the way you visit is set to change.

Following a dramatic rise in visitor numbers, increasing overcrowding, and a growing number of incidents involving poor tourist behaviour, Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is introducing an online reservation system, with daily visitor numbers potentially capped during the busy winter season.

Here's everything you need to know before planning your visit.

Why Is Japan's Snow Monkey Park Introducing Reservations?

The popularity of Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park has exploded in recent years. During peak winter months, the park regularly welcomes 3,000–4,000 visitors per day, resulting in long queues stretching outside the ticket office and increasingly crowded viewing areas.

While seeing the snow monkeys is an unforgettable experience, the sheer number of visitors has begun affecting both the visitor experience and the wellbeing of the wild macaques.

To better manage crowds, improve safety, and protect the monkeys' natural environment, the park will begin introducing an online advance booking system from August, with the possibility of limiting attendance to 2,000 visitors per dayduring busy periods.

Poor Visitor Behaviour Has Become a Growing Problem

One of the biggest reasons behind the change has been an increase in inappropriate behaviour from visitors.

Park officials have reported incidents including:

  • Attempting to feed the monkeys

  • Trying to touch or approach the animals

  • Standing too close for photographs

  • Attempting to bathe in the hot springs alongside the monkeys

Although the Japanese macaques are accustomed to human presence, they are completely wild animals. Visitors have always been instructed to keep a respectful distance and never interfere with their natural behaviour, but the increase in tourism has made these rules more difficult to enforce.

The reservation system is intended to create a calmer environment that benefits both visitors and the monkeys themselves.

How Will Reservations Work?

The new online booking system is expected to begin rolling out from August, replacing the current walk-up ticket purchasing system during busy periods. Park officials have indicated that visitors will be encouraged—or potentially required—to purchase admission online before arriving to reduce ticket queues and better manage daily visitor numbers.

At the time of writing, the park has not yet released full details of:

  • How far in advance reservations will open

  • Whether reservations will be mandatory every day or only during peak periods

  • Whether same-day tickets will remain available

For the latest updates and reservation information, it's recommended that visitors check the official Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park website before travelling.

Winter Will Still Be the Best Time to Visit

Despite the upcoming changes, winter remains the best season to see the famous snow monkeys bathing.

BetweenDecember and March, snow blankets the valley and the monkeys spend long periods soaking in the natural hot springs to stay warm—creating the iconic images that have made the park famous around the world. During warmer months the monkeys continue to visit the park, but they are less likely to spend extended periods in the baths.

If daily visitor caps are introduced during winter, booking well in advance will likely become essential.
